Network errors during data uploading
At upload time, your browser creates a direct connection to our Amazon S3 storage, and uses standard Amazon javascript APIs to push your files to our data upload bucket(s). With browser-based uploads, it is possible for a network error, or an intentional termination from your IT security system, to cause a file upload to abort with an error.
We have customers regularly uploading 10s or even 100s of GB datasets via their browser, so there is not a general problem with the service and large file uploads. File upload issues are not related to the content of the files that you are uploading - we do not do anything with your files until all of the data is successfully received into our upload bucket. Our browser-based upload facility does have a mechanism to restart an upload if there is a network outage, so the upload should not fail if you experience a temporary network dropout.
In rare cases, we have seen some customers with intelligent “threat detection” firewalls have problems, because the system thinks data might be getting maliciously uploaded from your network to an external destination.
This can be remedied, but does require your IT staff to make some changes to allow our service to be accessible. If you send us a support request, we can verify that this is the problem, and work with your IT people to find a solution.
If you are having persistent upload issues, please contact our support team and we will work with you to find a solution. For very large jobs, we can use alternative ways to get the data into our service from other online storage services.
